WORLD MACHAL - Volunteers from overseas in the Israel Defense Forces

The Memorial

near Sha’ar Hagai and the historical Burma Road in the Judean Hills

The Machal Memorial is dedicated to the 123 Machal Volunteers (119 men and 4 women) who lost their lives in Israel’s struggle for independence (1947-49).

The creation of the Memorial was the dream of Stanley Medicks, a Machalnik from Kenya, who now heads the U.K., Europe, and Scandinavian Overseas Machal Association.

With the funds raised mainly by Stanley Medicks, together with the tremendous help of Keren Kayemet L’Israel in planning and building the edifice, the Machal Memorial at Sha’ar Hagai was inaugurated in the presence of the late Yitzhak Rabin, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, on 25th April, 1993.

A memorial service to the Machal Fallen is held every Yom Hazicharon (Remembrance Day) at the Memorial in the Yitzhak Rabin Forest.
